I suggest that the next Bb. Pilipinas must not necessarily be the most intelligent but someone who is witty and can engagingly carry a conversation pretty well. She must not necessarily be the most beautiful but she should rather be someone who has the X-factor matched with amazing personality and incredible posture/catwalk worthy of emulation for her to stand out among the many beautiful ladies all over the world. That X-factor can surely make heads turn and give her a second look! An amazing and compassionate personality can definitely capture the hearts not only of the judges but importantly the rest of the people who look for someone to emulate. Her life must be with a purpose, something that people would like to talk about and consider as exemplary and inspiring. All these must come in one package if we expect a Filipina to consistently enter the finals in the Miss Universe and Miss World Pageants. The Bb. Pilipinas organizers must also try to be patriotic in choosing the gowns and other wardrobes of our representatives. A modernized terno is an amazing piece of art which would definitely showcase the ingenuity of the Filipino. We have many good designers who can lend a hand in choosing the perfect wardrobes for our girl to make her look stunning and elegant rather than acquiring the services from other foreign lands which I am sure they would never totally give our girl the perfect look because, of course, they also want their rep to win the crown. The BPCI must also stop the habit of cooking "lutong macao" if we really want to send the best representative we could ever have. There are so many beautiful Filipinas with great personalities but were often discouraged to join the pageant for they knew they will never be able to make it since they don't have a strong hold with anyone involved in the beauty pageant. The judging must be fair and square. Period. I think we need an overhaul in the BPCI. Madam Araneta, though she’s married to a Filipino, is a Colombian by heart remember and I personally believe she’s not really that committed in choosing the best Filipino woman to represent our country for the right pageant more particularly so in the Miss Universe. We are such a beauty pageant crazy country we don't deserve to have a mediocre Bb. Pilipinas titleholder!

Subject: TIPS SA MGA SASALI NG BEAUTY PAGEANT(Mula kay Wanda Ilusyunada

Author:
WANDA ILUSYUNADA(Ang Ines Legron ng Pink Mafia)
[Edit]

Byukonera

yung tamang attitude kasi nagiging kompidenz yan, tandaan mo.

wirit paniwalaan lahat ng binibida nung host. lalu na pag napangalanan na yung top 15 o kaya top 10 tapos sasabihin niya, "thank you, girls, you are all winners just being here on stage ..."

4. aksident prone area

remember me dis way mo yung alamat ng "kaya niyo yon"?

yun yung may byondaciousness na gurlilet na rumarampage kunsaan tapos nadulas tapos sabi niya, "O HA, kaya niyo yon?" at nagfiling na waing nangyari yung hitad kahit knowsline chinatown mo namang napahiya siya ng over.

e akalain mo may pinanggalingan pala yung chikkang yon.

3. projek runway

pag tinanong kung dine in o take out, PROJEK.

Ruffa originally wed Richard Daloia in Vegas in 1999 so when she 'married' Ylmas Bektaz four years later, the latter 'marriage' wasn't legal, according to the Turkish oil billionaire. He is going to sue Ruffa for kidnapping their two American(-born) kinds, according to www.GMANews.tv at:

I hope beauty pageant organizations in the Philippines cease operation because nobody is safe from being ridiculed to the core. Let those pinoy faggots who are unsatisfied with any winner to join instead. Let them have a taste of their own medicine. Amen! (Ah Men) Wala na sanang sumaling magaganda!

Haven't you remembered na Michelle Reyes ay galing sa kanya at nakapaguwi not one but two titles - Miss Toursim International and Miss Tourism World? And Jhezarie Javier though she didn't make the cut sa Miss International took home instead the Miss ASEAN? And Maffae Yunon was partly trained by Jonas too? And there's one common denominator - they were never trained in Coloombia - only their national costumes made by Barraza were recycled.

So who's to blame? No other than their training stint in Colombia. Magagaling sina Jonas and Rodgil kaya lang pag pinapupunta sa Colombia, PUMAPANGIT! Nagmumukhang katulong to the max!

Pilipinas at nanalo pa, then the rest is up to Stella na.

Subject: MISS UNIVERSE 2007: ASIAN TRIUMPH IN THE LAND OF PAGEANT-PASSIONATE LATINO-LAND (PART 1)

Author:
Joseph Vitug
[Edit]

Date Posted: 22:23:33 06/04/07 Mon

When I learned that this year’s Miss Universe pageant will be held in Mexico, I braced myself for a pageant dominated by Caucasians and Latinos, that Asians and other people of color would only be given a token slot, at most, even if say, these nations would field outstanding contestants. Judging from the past three editions of this pageant, there seems to be a few laws that are followed, namely:

• There should be at most one Asian in the semifinals.*1
• There should be at most one lady with dark skin in the semifinals. *2
• Blondes will be represented in the final round. *3
• Miss Mexico should be in the final cut, or else…*4

*1 In 1978, Israel is technically the “Asian” in the group, though these days Israel tends to associate itself with Europe. In 1989, no Asians made it. In 1993, India made it. Australia may be associated with the Asia-Pacific region lately, and it is often grouped with the Asians, but strictly speaking, Australia isn’t in Asia.
*2 In 1978, no dark-skinned lady made the cut. In 1989, the dark-skinned contingent was represented by Jamaica’s Sandra Foster while in 1993 it was represented by USA’s Kenya Summer Moore.
*3 In 1978, blondes are represented by Mz. USA and Sweden (1st and 4th runner-up respectively); in 1989, there were three blondes with Mz. Holland, Sweden, and Poland (Miss Universe, 1st and 3rd runner-up respectively); and 1993, there was Australia’s Voni Delfos keeping a finals slot warm for the blondes, eventually ending up in 4th place.
*4 It wasn’t a problem in 1978 and 1989 as Mexico made the semifinals, but a wild uproar ensued when Mexico missed the Top 10 in 1993, leading them to boorishly boo Miss USA whenever she appeared throughout in the final broadcast.

Looking through this year’s batch of contestants, I was praying that a few of these rules would be broken as I found so many stunning Asians and Africans. There are also so many strong blondes and I would be happy to see some of them there (any of them, really), but I was hoping for at least four Asians and two black Africans in the final cut. Did my wishes come true?

Let’s leave that question unanswered for the moment so we can talk about the telecast itself. There were only a few subtle changes from last year’s telecast, namely:

• After expanding the list of semifinalists from 15 to 20 last year, it is back to 15 this year.
• The final interview doesn’t have a chit-chat section anymore—just a straightforward Q&A.
• The final interview is now questions asked by the judges, instead of questions composed by the five finalists and the reigning Miss Universe.

The stage may have been very contemporary (and modeled after the most recent Victoria’s Secret fashion show), but I missed the Mexican flavor they used to infuse in previous editions. Video projections of Aztec icons and adding a large Aztec sun disc as a prop in the swimsuit round were not enough to create a warm cultural touch to what was essentially a cold, impersonal, modernist backdrop. In a flippant note, the stage also reminded me of Elvis Presley’s 1968 landmark TV special and his musical number in the movie “Jailhouse Rock.”

The hosting of Vanessa Minnillo and Mario Lopez is expectedly competent and flawless. Vanessa employed her extensive experience hosting MTV Total Request Live and as correspondent to Entertainment Tonight to have complete command of the show, even firmly yet politely disciplining the unruly Mexican crowd when Miss USA came on during the final interview. Mario may primarily be known as an actor (“Saved by the Bell”) and as a well-regarded runner-up in Dancing with the Stars, but he also has significant hosting experience up his sleeve. He kept control of himself in the way he conducted his job, but you just have that subtle sense that he’s thrilled with this gig, especially with his noted red-blooded Casanova reputation*5. Better this than the Neanderthal chauvinistic hosting style of Ariel Ureta at Miss Earth.

*5 Another piquant note about Mario Lopez—I recalled watching a children’s game show hosted by Mario several years ago, and even then without trying Mario seems to be packing “heat”. Obviously you can’t really help it if you’re naturally built that way.

I enjoyed the taped TV introductions in national costumes*6, and I felt sad regarding rumors (fueled by the absence of a national costume award this year and the lack of a full-fledged costume competition with a last minute change in format and venue among the pre-pageant activities) that they’ll eliminate this portion in future editions. I speculate it was a matter of a lack of sponsorship that the award is absent this year.

*6 Set to Nelly Furtado’s US No. 1 smash “Say It Right.” I don’t really see how this song fits in a pageant, but I love the song anyway.

Instead of hiring two live musical acts this year, they manage only to get only one—Mexican pop vocal group RBD—to perform in one of the semifinal rounds (only the swimsuit round this time). They are aiight by me, as Randy Jackson would say it. Canned pop music was used instead for the evening gown round, piping in Sean Paul and Keyshia Cole’s duet “Give Your Love to Me”. The music unexpectedly worked, in my opinion*7.

*7 Actually, I always thought Sean Paul’s grooves could be a good fit for a catwalk/gown round, but I know most choreographers would tend to visualize wet T-shirts and denim hotpants when they play his music. When I hear his No. 1 smash “Get Busy”, I visualize gorgeous gamines dressed elegantly presenting themselves before royalty. For his other No. 1 smash “Temperature”, I visualize gamines swaying and strutting long strides in choreographed unison walking across the stage and on a catwalk. Maybe “Temperature” would’ve been a great fit for a swimsuit round.

With the exception of 1993, there was one woman who would always appear in a Mexico-held Miss Universe telecast who would always take my breath away. She was in the board of judges in 1978 and this edition, and she was on hand to help out with the prizes in 1989. The key reason she took my breath away was because it was so amazing how she looked—it was as if she has drank the fountain of youth. She’s Christiane Martel de Aleman, wife of the governor of Veracruz, Mexico and Miss Universe 1953 from France. In 1978, she looked youthful enough that she could actually still compete with the delegates out there—hard to believe she won the crown 25 years before that. In 1989, she looked like a lady in her early 30s. Now, she simply looked like a gorgeous lady in her 40s. She and Apasra Hongsakula are the front-runners for the title of best-preserved beauties. Are you sure she won the crown 54 years ago? Older members of the Miss World Sorority, especially her compatriot Denise Perrier who won in the same year as she did, would look like her aunts if you dare have them seat beside her. Not to mention the first Miss Universe Armi Kuusela—they only won their titles one year apart, but if you look at them side-by-side now, it would be as if Christiane won her crown about two decades later. Man, if only we can look as good as her when we reach her age.

Before we discuss the semifinalists and finalists, of course we should pay tribute to the ladies who won the special awards, namely:

PHILIPPINES – Anna Teresa Licaros. Alright, we know the value of the Miss Photogenic award has diminished because it is now judged according to Internet popularity (they should rename it as such) and we know how to deploy our resources to get that edge over other countries. But still, any consolation is still welcome because this lady did perform at a high competitive level—in fact, rumor has it that if the Top 15 was solely decided by the preliminary judging panel without any inputs from Trump & Co., she would be in it. Anyway, she looked deservingly photogenic when she received her award on TV—love the way her hair was styled that night—she would’ve probably had a more convincing performance if her hairdo was like that during the presentation show.

CHINA – Ningning Zhang. This sweet lady won the Miss Congeniality award. It turns out to be an all-Asian victory when it comes to the crown and the special awards, and in my opinion it’s a moment worth relishing.

Coming up: The Top 15.

Inside Sources say Spain, Paraguay, Greece, Serbia, and Philippines were in the "real" Top 15 but replaced with Nicaragua (who was apparently 16), Czech Republic (who was 19), and three others who nobody has yet named. Interesting! They should just send through the 15 or 20 with the highest scores or at least lie about it. Instead Trump boldly rubs it in everyone's faces that the pageant is at least partly fixed as to who advances. Why don't they have a 4th level of preliminary competition that includes a second interview with the management of Miss Universe LLC and let that be 25% of the preliminary score?

MISS U 2007 LESSON LEARNED
I hope the Bb organizers learned their lesson during the recently concluded Miss U and perhaps adopt a new method of selecting the winner to the Miss U so as not to waste their efforts and disappoint their Filipino supporters year after year. So what did we see from the final 5. We saw 2 Asians who clearly demonstrated what the Miss U is looking for ...a beautiful face, killer bod, the right gown, engaging personality and ramping skills to boot- enough to propel them to the finals round. What propelled Licaros to win the Bb Universe title is her shear interview skills which unfortunately for her and to us all was not enough to lend her a spot, at least in the semifinals at the Miss U. So much emphasis is given to THAT Bb contestant who can converse well in English and without a glitch when in fact both Misses Korea and Japan used their native language to answer their final question. So why can't we do the same? Are we crippled by our "colonial mentality". Screw that. Who needs that mentality nowadays. We ought to be proud of our language and let our language be heard across the globe when spoken to. That said, I propose to the Bb hardheads and elitists this:
1.That during interviews, all lady contestants may choose any language of choice and that they be judged as to content of answer, vibrance and confidence while being interviewed. If one chooses to speak English, correctness in the English grammar should not be a basis to score high points. Lets leave that in the English classroom folks.
2. Choose the most beautiful, sexy and captivating Filipina in the pageant. If she happens to be raw, well, get her trained in all aspects of the Miss U competition.
3. Training should be left to local pageant veterans so that our contestant retains her Filipina-ness rather than adopting a second rate Colombian wannabe-look. Notice how our ladies became Hispanicized after their Colombian training and therefore become unnoticed by the judges as they just fade away amongst the sea of Latin beauties. The Filipina beauty if left untainted is a world class beauty.
3. Gowns and costumes should be assigned to the best local or international designer who wants to get a break for his or her business. I trust in the Filipino creativity and ingenuity. The Colombian designer has definitely lost his steam. The Bb should definitely consider scouting around for fresh new talents.
4. Lastly, to Madam whoever and your advisors. Please be aware that times have changed. If u dont keep up with the times, you had better step down and let someone else do a better job or all you can ever expect are disappointed Filipinos year after year whose unwaivering support to our Filipina rep propels her to winning the Miss U Photogenic Internet award. It is such an irony because an award should be respected at all cost but yet here we find that we become the target of ridicule and laughing stock in the beauty pageant community. I speak only for myself, but I cringe when the photogenic award is being handed. Should we care what the universe thinks? I think we should because after all, our Filipina deserves more than a just a texters vote.

Miss Argentina speaks out

The Argentine delegate to Miss Universe 2007 Daniela Stucan commented to a local radio station that the Asian countries had a lot of influence on Miss Japan's victory. Here are some of her statements [my translation] that were printed in Infobae.com:

- "I represented Argentina in Miss Universe, which is the most important contest."
- "People were saying many things. In pageants, there are many interests in the way. They were saying that Asian countries were worried that another Latin would win, and that they would withdraw next year if this happened."
- "Asia won all of the prizes. From what I've heard, I was in the top 20, but the list was cut down to 15, so I am not really sure."

Well, she certainly doesn't sound as bitter as Brazil's Natália Guimarães, but like her Brazilian counterpart, Stucan is unquestionably disillusioned. Why is it that Latin delegates cannot fathom the possibility than an Asian can beat the crap out of them? The only reason Miss Philippines Anna Theresa Licaros won Miss Photogenic is because of a strong Filipino fan base. Miss China NingNing Zhang won Miss Congeniality because the majority of her peers voted for her. There's no Asian conspiracy behind these prizes. Also, it's a bit presumptuous of Stucan to declare that Miss Universe is "the most important contest" - this coming from someone who placed fourth in Miss Earth 2001, a pageant that has already surpassed Miss Universe in production quality. Stucan has competed in several pageants and has either won or placed decently; unfortunately, Miss Universe was not one of them.

For the information of everyone I started watching Beauty Pageants especially the Miss Universe tilt in 2001 but the year I have become a Fan began in 2004 when Jennifer Hawkins won! in 2005 I discovered this board and joined the bandwagon in posting and predicting The Favorites! (And in that year I began to carve my graphic skills too lol!)

With regards to that, I would like to look back to my past choices and compare how well I do in analyzing and predicting the eventual semifinalists:: Here it goes...

2005

I got 6/15 ---------->Is that bad?

2006

I got 11/20 plus Thailand as one of my alternates!

2007

I got 10/15 -----> I'm quite ecstatic with this record, a sign of big improvement!

I just realized I did better compared to popular pageant related sites like Globalbeauties (which predicted 8/15 and Missosology with 5/15. I am very pleased with the actual turn out of the pageant, it has all the elements that I want to see in a show. I'm so impressed with the production values, excellent choreography, the perfect lighting, the camera panning, and contrary to criticalbeauties' disgust over the stage design, I think it's very innovative and stylish! I have never been this overwhelmed with the Miss Universe Pageant, though I'm not a big Riyo fan (cuz my heart is for Honey Lee) I expect her to be one phenomenal Miss Universe throughout the year!

I'd say great job to the MUO team for putting up a sensational show! It truly scored high points in the ratings game here in my country, with this I would like to congratulate our two giant networks here GMA and ABS-CBN for putting up a blow by blow coverage of the pageant (especially the latter for it's tireless efforts, I love their idea of putting up a Miss Universe pre-pageant special prior to the actual show, seeing former beauty queens especially the beautiful Gloria Diaz on tv added more glamour to my anticipation, it was truly the most beautiful day in the universe)

So that's it!! Clap clap!!

I did join some pageants but it was back in the United Kingdom. I did Body Shots UK and I did Miss Philippines UK.

Then maybe you should also do other pageants, like Binibining Pilipinas.

The Hawaiian Tropic International in Las Vegas will be my last. Ha ha ha! I kept on saying before, in other pageants I did: “This will be my last. This will be my last.” But people would ask me to join and they would talk me into it and all that, so I’m like,“Okay, okay.” [But with Binibining Pilipinas], Uh,No. I feel that a pure Filipina girl should win that. I don’t feel worthy enough to win a Title of, uhm, a homegrown pageant.

Yeah, tell us something about your British heritage.

I was born and was raised in England. By blood, my father’s British and my mom’s Filipina. My father died when I was younger so I grew up with just my single Filipino mom. So I kind of consider myself more Filipina because the culture was all there. I grew up eating the food. My mom was from Nueva Ecija so I would hear Ilocano, sometimes Tagalog. When you’re raised by a single parent who is pure Filipino, that’s like the main influence on me.

Why terrific Theresa got lost in the universe
By Giovanni Paolo J. Yazon

AFTER a little over a month of preparation and weeks of anticipation, Anna Theresa Luy Licaros, our bet to this year’s Miss Universe beauty contest, failed to duplicate the feat of Gloria Maria Aspillera Diaz (1969) and Maria Margarita Roxas Moran (1973) last May 29.

The 22-year-old law student and broadcast communications major who graduated summa cum laude at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, along with half-Filipino candidates Kirby Ann Basken of Norway and Angelina Glass of Germany, and 64 other ladies, all entered the backstage gracefully after the parade of nations.

In the end, it was the raven-haired and leggy Riyo Mori, a 20-year-old lifelong ballet dancer, who walked away with the Miss Universe crown, Japan’s second.

But Licaros didn’t go out of the National Auditorium empty handed. She won as Most Photogenic for topping the Internet polls, which now makes her the seventh Filipino to become the delight of press photographers and Web surfers in the pageant’s 56-year history—the other six include Vida Valentina Fernandez Doria (1970), Margie Moran (1973), Aileen Leng Marfori Damiles (18th placer in 1996), Abbygale Williamson Arenas (11th placer in 1997), Gionna Jimenez Cabrera (2005) and Lia Andrea Aquino Ramos (2006).

Are we just contented of seeing our representatives getting the same special award every year? Many noticed that when Licaros accepted her crystal trophy last Tuesday, she seemed to be more disgusted than delighted.
She deserves more than just a 20-second exposure on stage.
Wasted beauty

Licaros is articulate and intelligent. She’s a summa cum laude. So what? Rachel Smith of the United States was just a magna cum laude, but she effortlessly landed on the top 10 and even placed fourth runner-up.

Licaros isn’t the “wrong girl,” it’s just that she was sent out to the battlefield “half baked.” She lacked the global appeal that her fellow Asian candidates—semifinalist Farung Yuthithum of Thailand, finalist Puja Gupta of India, third runner-up Honey Lee of Korea and eventual winner Riyo Mori of Japan—all have.

During the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, a candidate’s “brain power” is of primary consideration. There were three rounds of interviews: casual, judges’ question, and the final question.

But nowadays, physical beauty is given more emphasis, that’s why the swimsuit and long gown competitions come first. Only the five finalists are given the opportunity to let everyone hear what’s between their ears. To quote host Mario Lopez: “The good news to the other five [who won’t be chosen] is that you don’t have to go through the interviews [anymore].” It goes to show that Miss Universe is still a beauty contest, not a quiz bee or a “battle of the brains.”

Total overhaul needed

Instead of crying over spilled milk, pointing fingers or putting the blame to certain people, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. should take Licaros’ defeat as a wake-up call. Something must be changed in their system. Here are some suggestions:

Move the national pageant to an earlier date. This will give the winners ample time to prepare for their assignments. This formula has been tried and tested when the country hosted the Miss Universe pageant in May 2004. Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta conducted the 1994 Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant seven months before the prestigious global pageant. The results: Hometown girl Charlene Gonzalez made it as top six finalist and was awarded Best in National Costume; her “batch mates” Alma Concepcion became a semifinalist and Miss Friendship awardee in Miss International, while Caroline Subijano made it to the semis of Miss World. Short time to prepare is like cramming up for a major exam the night before the dreary outcome.

Intensive training

The organizers should asses each titleholders’ strong points and reinforce it. Weak points—inability to express ideas well during interviews, thin hair, large hips, etc.—should be corrected. The option of cosmetic surgery must be left open. They should also require the winners to finish the personality development trainings granted to them, just like the Dale Carnegie course. Miriam Quiambao and Precious Lara Quigaman religiously attended this training. It helped them how to handle pressure and make high impact presentations abroad. Look how far they went at their respective competitions?

Upgrade in wardrobe. Shining, shimmering and fully beaded (and recycled) gowns are definitely out, wispy and weightless fabrics are in (read: function over form). For a change, maybe the organizers can try “local talents” to make the costumes or evening gowns of our representatives—either up-and-coming fashion designers packed with fresh minds and unconventional ideas or the established ones like Inno Sotto or Monique Lhuillier.

Changes don’t happen overnight. But if the organizers would take these suggestions positively and start improving, they will expect a “ripe harvest” in the near future. Having our third Miss Universe, or our first Miss World, is in sight!

It seems the only way BPCI cohorts will relinquish the MU franchise is through death. Let's speed that up for them, shall we?
