Preliminary Scoops
This is an update from our friend, Keno, one of Beautydome's partner, who went with his friends to witness the much awaited preliminary competition. Some parts are paraphrased.
My 3 friends and I went at the National Auditorium wednesday night, and of course we were awesomely excited. The rush of the feeling that morning was beyond exceptional, and we can't wait how Laural, Miss New Zealand Universe, will impress the judges.
The seat placements that we got might not be as good as we expected--about 20 meters away from the tip ramp of the ramp.
That day was the day as my first time to see Lupita Jones, fromer Miss Universe, in person. She was beautiful and looking elegant, as always. Migs, a friend of mine, even shook me when she saw Zuleyka; he was not there last Miss Universe 2006. Zuleyka was one of the emcee of the preliminary competition.
We went so excited when we were told that the show was about to start. People from Mexico, of course, roared wild out of excitement shouting: "Mexico, Mexico!" Then again, it wasn't just them. The whole crowd went excited when the show was about to start.
You must have seen how ecstatic the opening number was throught videos right? It was awesome! Contrary to what Shiegrea (Beautydome's graphic desinger) said as she did not like it and according to her, it doesn't show cultural relevance and all of those hoolabaloos. But Migs and I thought otherwise. It was a fantastic opening number, seeing those girls wearing their Tadashi dresses on those leveled platforms, while the others would ramp on stage--the idea was superb.
And so the preliminary competition did start. Here are the girls who we thought stood out: Obviously, crowd support goes to Miss Mexico, whose face was radiant looking because of her gown. When Miss Tanzania went on stage, the people were also roaring for her; her face was different in person. However, her gown was a total disappointment although she carried it nicely. Who could set Miss Greece aside? Her face was totally lovely. Migs, Shigs, and I looked at each other when it was her turn to walk, of course our minds told each other: "Here's one of our favorites." Suprisingly enough, her catwalk wasn't that good. Her SS presentation was more of a stiff walker. Just our cents opinion would say that she might be one of the bottom half when we speak of catwalk skills. Then again, of course, she is lovely and her face was to die for. Speaking of a face to die for, Miss Korea, Honey Lee, would definitely top the title. Beautydome did not vote for her as the Most Beautiful Face winner if she is not deserving right? She was lovely. Having been a fan of Honey Lee, I immediatley noticed that she changed her gown. Another Asian delegate who tops the preliminary list would be Miss Japan, she wore a gucci. And later we found out that it was the same design worn one time by Oprah Winfrey. She really knew how to work that gown! Shigrea told me, "It's fantastic, I want that gown." Then Migs was the one who answered, "Is it really the type you should wear for a Miss Universe pageant?" Of course, Shigs and I told him that they can wear whatever gown they like. Who could forget the infamous gown Miss Universe Japan 2004 wore? Nevertheless, Miss Japan knows how to carry the gown. Plus, her SS ramp was lively! It is safe to say that she is one of the Top 15 ladies come Monday. Much to my surprise, as I am not a fan of her, Miss Puerto Rico totally knew how to "work it." Her gown was one of the best that evening, her walk goes with it as well.
Ok, so it's Lau's turn, Miss New Zealand, we cheered for her of course. One funny moment was that Shigs choked; "excessive cheering" she told us. I can't say enough about her but that she could really be one of the dark horses this year. If she enters the Top 15, it won't be much of a surprise for us.
Miss South Africa was definitely stunning on her gown. The way she carried it was much more of an elegance. I wouldn't vote for her as my Miss Elegance if I don't think she is one. When the spotlights hit her face, a total wow as she stood out from her group! Moreover, almost all of the red gowns stood out when the ladies are standing on groups. Miss Malaysia's gown wasn't that flattering but has caught my eye when she is on group. "Was that the one she wore on her National Pageant?" I asked my friends. Shigs replied, "I was asking my self the same thing." Miss Philippines, who I thought would do well in the EG portion did not meet my expectation. Her projection was mysterious, which is a plus; her face was "mysteriously understandable," which is a minus. I'd say she still has a chance Interview-wise, and a 50-65% chance for her bubbly SS event. Another disappointment would be Miss Spain, who we thought did not do very well on her SS and EG presentation. Although, nothing can take away the fact that she looked stunning while she walked during her EG presentation. A plus side for Miss Guatemala on the other hand was her EG presentation, it was lovely. Her white gown complemented and complimented her so much. The chandelier earring that she wore, which is a known strategy for gowns, did not overdo her presentation. She strited like a floating cloud, I thought to myself. With this, I also won't be surprised if she enters the semis, it is on a 80% chance I believe.
In terms of EG presentation and walk, it is worthy of recommendation that a lady must let her arms loose and swim as she walks. It would look stiff if you would put your hands on your hips or waist if you walk. Despite this, Miss Indonesia's EG presentation was also a surprise for me. She was stunningly ravishing even though she has her hand on her waist. Her SS presentation was ok. Miss Italy looked like she was on a runway. Her presence and aura was that of a supermodel. We totally liked her SS presentation.
A few more ladies stood out and was totally memorable, but I need not explain further as I deem it unecessary. They are lovely, period. That's my point. Miss Venezuela, Miss USA, Miss Brazil, and Miss Thailand are on almost everybody's list after the preliminaries, and they should be!
After the event, the three of us went out and extended the day of fun. It was a wonderful experience and we can't wait for the Finals Night. Oh by the way, when the program ended and we were again cheering loudly for Laural, Shigs once again choked! Funny indeed.
